David Beers Biography and Link to the Tyee
David Beers Biography
David Beers is the founding editor of the Tyee. Prior to that he was a senior editor at The Vancouver Sun,Mother Jones and the San Francisco Examiner, and he’s won national honors for his writing and editing in Canada and the U.S. “Nothing compares with the pleasure of starting the Tyee, affording so many talented, brilliant writers, artists and media entrepreneurs a vehicle for sharing their talents with this amazing province and the world,” says Beers.
Since its inception in November of 2003 The Tyee team has won Canada’s Excellence in Journalism Award, two North America-wide Edward R. Murrow Awards, and many other prizes. (The Tyee eclipsed a million page views per month in 2012).
He wants to establish a sustainable model for independent journalism. One that widens and deepens the democratic conversation about how to create positive change.
David also co-founded The Tyee Solutions Society, a non-profit that seeks philanthropic support for journalism in the public interest, reporting projects made available to be published by other publications as well as The Tyee. He is an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and author of a memoir: Blue Sky Dream.
